US FAA orders engine inspections after Southwest on-flight explosion

Blowout Investigators examine the damage to the engine of the plane

Some passengers aboard the harrowing Southwest Airlines flight forced to make an emergency landing earlier this week received thousands of dollars in compensation after one person was killed when one of the plane's engine exploded midair. That incident prompted the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to propose last year that similar fan blades undergo ultrasonic inspections and be replaced if they failed.

"I'm very proud of him. This is a calling that he has and he did amazing", said Stephanie Needum, who was on board Flight 1380.

Riordan was well known in New Mexico, where she built a career over more than two decades in community relations and communications after graduating from the University of New Mexico. His wife nodded that it was OK for Needum to leave his family to help the injured woman. Several passengers unsuccessfully tried to pull the woman away from the window and back into the plane, and others stuffed clothes and jackets in an attempt to plug the hole, passenger Marty Martinez said.

Flight attendants know their audience is mostly tuned out when they explain how to buckle seat belts, wear oxygen masks and use seats for flotation devices. "That lady, I applaud her", said Alfred Tumlinson, of Corpus Christi, Texas.

While some flight attendants may have a bit of fun by customizing their announcements, that can distract passengers from the message, Cochran said.

"I can't think of a better one", former Continental Airlines CEO Gordon Bethune told CNBC.

She eventually died from blunt impact trauma at a Philadelphia hospital, after the plane made an emergency landing.

'When I saw Jennifer.

A retired registered school nurse said she performed CPR on Riordan, who passengers say was partially sucked out of a damaged window on the jet.

On Tuesday night, Robert Sumwalt, NTSB chairman, told reporters that a preliminary inspection of the engine on the ground indicated one of the 24 fan blades on the engine - the No. 13 blade - was broken off at the hub and missing. Last year, the FAA estimated that an order would cover 220 engines on U.S. airlines.

After a recent look, Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:LUV) has a 50-day Moving Average of 57.29, the 200-day Moving Average is 58.04, and the 7-day is noted at 54.74.

The FAA proposed making the recommendation mandatory in August but never issued a final decision. If you want to be dismissed as irrelevant, try using the phrase "We've always done it this way".

According to Fortune, based on National Safety Council data, Americans have a 1 in 114 chance of dying in a car crash.

"They're going to figure this out pretty fast, because it affects so many aircraft and so many engines", he said.

Southwest is ordering inspections of its entire fleet. United Airlines executives said Wednesday that they had begun to inspect some of their planes. Sumwalt said the plane touched down at about 190mph, while a jet of that size would typically land at around 155mph. It will not be clear until the FAA issues its rule how many will need inspections. It was a story of a pilot with seeming nerves of steel, who brought the plane down safely for the other 143 passengers on board. "The crack was interior, so certainly not detectable from looking at it from the outside".

"Statistically speaking, it seems like [airplanes] are pretty safe", Riley said. It added, though, that blades are swapped in and out of engines and aren't tracked.
