Things to remember about Barbara Bush

The Democratic challengers, Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro, questioned whether wealthy people such as the Bushes could relate to average Americans.

Like her mother-in-law, Barbara Bush, the younger Mrs. Bush championed literacy, an apt job, considering that she had at one time worked as a librarian.

Houston Texas star JJ Watt: "Rest In Peace Mrs. Barbara Bush". George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush were close personal friends with Walter and Leonore Annenberg, the former owners of the Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage.

The controversy grew. President George H.W. Bush publicly defended his wife's life choices.

You were a beautiful light in this world and I am forever thankful for your friendship.

Actor Patrick Dempsey: "It was a pleasure to have met. Thoughts and prayers to the Bush Family. Nancy and I extend our sympathy and prayers to the entire family", Sununu told WMUR's John DiStaso. But her grandmotherly white hair and fake pearls were deceiving. In 1993, Barbara handed the role of first lady to her successor, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

She was born in New York City in 1925. He says his mother "was warm and wonderful, until you got out of line".

Several former presidents and first ladies, as well as other dignitaries, are expected to attend. Plainspoken manner and utter lack of pretense made her more popular at times than her husband George H.W. Bush.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Mrs. Bush died Tuesday at age 92.

Bush was the only living wife of one former president and the mother of another former president. In private, Barbara was the same strong, kind, funny and loving woman the nation knew her to be. Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions. She was very, very gracious. I'm a lucky man that Barbara Bush was my mother. After they left the White House, she was a potent spokeswoman for two of her sons - George W. and Jeb - as they campaigned for office.

"Columba and I join every member of the Bush family in offering our sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support for my Mom in recent days, and throughout her remarkable life". She kept most of her sarcastic remarks contained in public, but her son discussed her temper in his book, and occasionally the press recorded an off the cuff remark.

"She possessed an old-fashioned love of country and service to others. Mrs. Bush will be dearly missed, but her legacy will impact generations to come", he said.

"I'll always treasure my summer visits to Kennebunkport".

As her husband and son's statement pointed out, Barbara Bush was best known for her work advancing universal literacy.

In a tweet, Gov. Paul LePage said that he's "saddened" by Mrs. Bush's passing. She was 16. He was 17.

"She had a wonderful sense of humor. If you don't stop and look around once and a while, you're going to miss it", Barbara said. Mrs. Bush was combing Robin's hair and holding her hand when she said she "saw her spirit go". Similarly, after an early debate when her husband brushed aside a question about the homeless with boiler plate about housing, Barbara exhorted him to make homelessness a campaign issue. Saturday's service will be by invitation only, according to the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation. "I leave that to George".
