'Get ready Russia': Trump tweets Syria missile threat
"A military intervention under far-fetched and fabricated pretexts in Syria, where there are Russian soldiers at the request of the legitimate Syrian government, is absolutely unacceptable and could have the most dire consequences", the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement obtained by Agence France-Presse.
Activists reported that government forces vacated strategic potential targets, including air bases around the country in apparent preparation for incoming strikes.
The two abovementioned tweets written in two different periods of time indicate the contradiction in the words and behaviour of US authorities, particularly the country's president.
The World Health Organisation on Wednesday demanded "immediate" access to the victims of the alleged chemical attack.
Syria and its ally Russia deny such an attack happened. While part of a regularly scheduled deployment, the Truman will deploy to the Mediterranean with a complement of strike and reconnaissance aircraft and surface warships sailing alongside.
Downing Street said the Prime Minister spoke to the US and French presidents on Tuesday, and said they had agreed to "continue working closely together" to ensure those responsible were "held to account".
Mr. Trump told reporters on Monday during a Cabinet meeting that the administration would be making a "major" decision on Syria within the next 24 to 48 hours. Asked if Putin bears responsibility, Trump has said that "if he does, it's going to be very tough, very tough".
But away from social media, many expressed concern.
Russian representative Vassily Nebenzia argued the incident in Douma was staged and that US military action in response could have "grave repercussions".
"We detect no public appetite for entering war when it probably won't make a difference".
Trump also conflated US tensions with Russia over special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, saying "much of the bad blood with Russia is caused by the Fake & Corrupt Russia Investigation". Last year, 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles targeted Syrian warplanes suspected of carrying out the chemical assault.
But Damascus allies confirmed that precautionary measures were being taken throughout Syria. She has said the use of chemical weapons "cannot go unchallenged".
United Nations chief Antonio Guterres said Tuesday the OPCW should be granted unfettered access to investigate.
Macron kept up the drumbeat for likely war with his claim of evidence that chemical weapons were used in the attack, although he did not elaborate. "Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart'", Trump wrote on Twitter.
Responding to Trump's tweets, Moscow on Wednesday said the US should strike "terrorists, rather than the legitimate government" in Syria.
Trump ordered a missile strike against Syria in April 2017 after a separate chemical attack killed more than 80 people.
President Donald Trump continued to weigh his options Thursday for responding to a chemical gas attack in Syria as his aides warned a miscalculated response could spark a dramatic escalation between the United States, Russia and Iran.
