UK MPs ask Facebook's Zuckerberg to testify on Cambridge Analytica data row

Popularity Of Social Networking Website Grows

Facebook shares plunged Monday as the social media giant was pounded by criticism at home and abroad over revelations that a firm working for Donald Trump's presidential campaign harvested and misused data on 50 million members.

The US Federal Trade Commission declined to comment on a Bloomberg report that it is investigating Facebook but said in a statement it was aware of the issues that have been raised.

Meanwhile, Channel 4 News has also broadcast hidden camera footage in which Cambridge Analytica chief executive Alexander Nix appears to suggest tactics his company could use to discredit politicians online. "We ran all the digital campaign, the digital campaign, the television campaign and our data informed all the strategy", Mr Nix told undercover reporters.

The developments have led to further questions about the powers of regulators to tackle such alleged inappropriate use of data.

"Most people don't read these agreements, and they don't know exactly what they're agreeing to", he said.

The firm said Mr Nix's statements "do not represent the values or operations of the firm and his suspension reflects the seriousness with which we view the violation".

Specific details of the 2011 decree included barring Facebook from making misrepresentations about privacy and security of personal information; getting user consent before making change that override privacy preferences; preventing material to be shared after an account was deleted or deactivated; and maintaining a privacy program assessing risks and getting this audited every two years.

The creation of Bitcoin inspired innovations like Ethereum, a computing network that also uses blockchain technology.

"We reject any suggestion of violation of the consent decree".

Schiff has pressed the data firm over allegations that it obtained private Facebook information from more than 50 million people without their consent.

Denham is also pursuing a warrant to search Cambridge Analytica's servers. And it just got even worse for CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook users can vote with their phones and laptops, opting out of the platform. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks dipped 0.16 points to 1,570.41.

A British parliamentary committee on Tuesday summoned Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to answer questions as authorities stepped up efforts to determine if the personal data of social media users has been used improperly to influence elections.

Roger McNamee, an early Facebook and Google investor who now heads an equity firm, and ethics mavens Norman Eisen and Fred Wertheimer place a good deal of the blame for the 2016 fiasco at Zuckerberg's feet. Now, these once-rebellious upstarts have become extremely powerful, and they know way too much about us. That is where our focus lies as we remain committed to vigorously enforcing our policies to protect people's information.

Tonight, a Cambridge Analytica spokesman said: "We entirely refute any allegation that Cambridge Analytica or any of its affiliates use entrapment, bribes, or so-called "honey-traps" for any purpose whatsoever..."

Deleting or deactivating Facebook isn't an option for everyone - you may not want to give up staying in touch with family and friends or participating in support groups.

Facebook, like a number of U.S. multinationals, has its European headquarters in Dublin and the office of Irish Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon said she was looking into the matter.

Market participants largely expect a total of three rate hikes this year, although some have not ruled out the possibility the U.S. central bank will hike four times. Facebook allowed Aleksandr Kogan, a psychology professor at the University of Cambridge who owns a company called Global Science Research, to harvest data from users who downloaded his app. The problem was that Facebook users who agreed to give their information to Kogan's app also gave up permission to harvest data on all their Facebook friends, as well, according to the Guardian.

Onetime Trump campaign advisor and Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon was previously vice president of Cambridge Analytica's board, according to the New York Times.
