UK investigating Facebook's response to alleged data breach

Trade Commission building is seen in Washington

Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham confirmed the move to Channel 4, which on Monday aired a documentary (below) that showed Cambridge Analytics execs - including CEO Alexander Nix - boasting about entrapping politicians, using honey traps and running fake news campaigns. In fact, of the 50 million user profiles scraped, only about 30 million contained enough information to match with existing records obtained from data brokers or provided by political campaigns.

"We see this as a coordinated attack by the media that's been going on for many many months in order to damage the company that had some involvement with the election of Donald Trump", he said.

The US State Department has a $500,000 contract with the British analysis firm facing allegations it misused Facebook user data and offered to dig dirt on its international clients' election opponents. We spent over $1 million on it, so it wasn't cheap but in terms of the amount of data that was collected, and the quality of that data, it was a rare example of where something was fast, relatively cheap, but high-quality, ' Wylie said.

Both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica have denied any wrongdoing.

However, Cambridge Analytica said the report had "grossly misrepresented" the conversations caught on camera.

Cambridge Analytica is best known for its work on President Donald Trump's campaign.

Shortly before the story broke, Facebook's external lawyers warned the Observer that it was making "false and defamatory" allegations and reserved Facebook's legal position. Last year it was blamed for, among other things, facilitating misinformation, contributing to polarization in Britain, Austria, Italy and elsewhere and enabling foreign political interference.

Every time they do, they share a bit of information about themselves: what they like, who their friends are, what they want to watch.

Turnbull added: "We've done it in Mexico, we've done it in Malaysia, and now we're moving to Brazil ..."

"It has to happen without anyone thinking that's propaganda because the moment you think that's propaganda the next question is, who's put that out?"

In a further step, Facebook said Monday that it had hired a digital forensics firm "to determine the accuracy of the claims that the Facebook data in question still exists".

Cambridge Analytica was created around 2013 initially with a focus on U.S. elections, with $15 million in backing from billionaire Republican donor Robert Mercer and a name chosen by future Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon, the New York Times reported. Facebook was severely criticised by the American and British press too.

Over the weekend, the New York Times and the Guardian newspaper revealed that the company stole information from 50 million Facebook users' profiles in the tech giant's biggest-ever data breach, to help the Trump election campaign design software to predict and influence voters' choices at the ballot box.

Facebook is claiming this can't exactly be considered a hack of its system as users of the app has voluntarily consented to it accessing their info.

Cambridge Analytics is a US-based voter profiling company.

Attorney Keith Altam, who is suing Facebook for aiding terror, says the social media company should be accountable for their actions.

Were you surprised that a researcher could access so much data and allegedly pass it to a third party in violation of Facebook's data use rules?

Chief security officer Alex Stamos said via Twitter that Dr. Kogan lied about how user data would be used in reference to the personality quiz and that as soon as they found out that the data had not been destroyed, Facebook began aggressively and actively pursuing its destruction. Facebook too lost $35 billion in market cap after shares tumbled eight percent on Monday.
