Scandal-hit Cambridge Analytica suspends chief executive

What Did Cambridge Analytica Do During The 2016 Election?

Facebook said it asked Cambridge Analytica to delete the data in 2015, but learned several days ago from "reports" that not all of it had been purged.

The New York Times and The Guardian reported last Saturday that CA harvested private information from more than 50 million Facebook users to develop techniques to support Mr Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign.

Schrems told Irish broadcaster RTE on Tuesday that the issue described by a whistleblower in the Observer was exactly what was described in the complaint to the Irish DPC in 2011 and that the regulator "could probably have prevented" Cambridge Analytica from securing that data.

If Facebook wants to set a precedent for tech companies, they'll implement compliance policies worldwide that reflect their commitment to GDPR. "The consensus is that we should be more open more quickly and that Mark needs to be the face on very difficult topics". The company has lost $60 billion of its stock market value over the last two days. The company, headquartered in the United Kingdom, was staffed by mostly British employees. "And we've rolled this out to literally hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people across America". Then it scored people on traits like openness, extroversion and agreeableness - aspects of the typical "big five" personality traits.

U.S. stock indexes closed broadly higher, led by gains in retailers, energy and industrial companies.

British lawmakers have summoned Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to give evidence over the scandal involving embattled London-based company Cambridge Analytica.

The request comes amid reports that a U.K. company used Facebook data to help Donald Trump win the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

"It is now time to hear from a senior Facebook executive with the sufficient authority to give an accurate account of this catastrophic failure of process", Collins wrote in a note addressed directly to Zuckerberg. "It was about how to suppress voters who were inclined to vote for me ... when you have a massive propaganda effort to prevent people from thinking straight, because they're being flooded with false information". He told the students in one May 2014 lecture, delivered in Russian, that data gleaned from social media unlocks key insights. "Protecting our community is more important than maximizing our profits".

But Kogan used to speak in glowing terms about the power of data from Facebook.

Facebook, like other social media platforms, and online user forums in general, is still living in the lotus-eater land of Section 230 protections.

All this data went into the company's much-hyped psychological profiles. Shares of Snap Inc fell 2.5 percent and Twitter Inc fell more than 10 percent.

But as the campaign advanced, the Cruz campaign became skeptical of the approach's.

She is seeking court approval to conduct her own searches at Cambridge Analytica, but has also queried Facebook's role.

Yet Cambridge boasted of its work after another client, Texas Republican Sen.

Nix called the practice "our secret sauce", although some have questioned its effectiveness of this method.

The first top-level executive echoed that. While previously describing it as just one challenge among many, he now warned them that there would be consequences, including possible regulatory changes, as well as impacts to Facebook's bottom line. If CA was able to obtain information on voters through Facebook, they would know where to specifically target propaganda to influence elections-just as Russia's Internet Research Agency did in 2016. And both campaigns ultimately soured on both the company and its CEO.

But the public rarely gets insight into the behind-the-scenes conversations at Facebook, even when the decisions made during them could impact a significant portion of the population.
