Russia Threatens Retaliation After Britain Expels Its Diplomats — Salisbury Poisoning

The muscle in Russia's military arsenal

The official Twitter account of Mr Putin meanwhile noted his participation in a meeting of Moscow's national security council which had "expressed grave concern over the destructive and provocative position of the British side". "The credibility of this Council will not survive if we fail to hold Russia accountable".

In a joint statement released while May was visiting the city, May, US President Donald Trump, France's Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Angela Merkel said they "abhor" the poison attack against Skripal and his daughter Yulia and share the assessment there was "no plausible alternative explanation" other than Russia being responsible.

"The British government made a choice for confrontation with Russia", the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Britain could count on NATO's solidarity, but that it had not invoked the alliance's mutual defence clause.

Asked if he knew what Moscow intended to do, Mr Johnson told BBC1's Breakfast: "That's a matter for them".

Skripal is working as a Russian military intelligence officer when the United Kingdom recruits him to pass state secrets on to MI6, the U.K.'s foreign intelligence service, according to media reports.

The sanctions mark some of the harshest since the Cold War, and both countries are likely expecting some explosive developments in the next few days. "I don't think this will deal a heavy blow to Russia's interests, although certainly the idea is that they try to set the elite against the country's leadership", she said.

The door sign of the Russian Consulate in London, Britain, March 14, 2018.

He added that he condemned the attack in the "strongest possible terms".

It means the would-be assassins who tried to target the former double agent may never have left Russia.

On Monday, British Prime Minister Theresa May accused Russia of perpetrating the attack and announced the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats.

Britain is also trying to build international consensus for a unified Western response, saying the attack in Salisbury is just the latest example of Russia's disregard for international norms on the rule of law.

The UK also possesses nuclear weapons, but Russia has more firepower and newer nuclear systems than any other nation, and has frequently taken to threatening its neighbors and bragging about its capability to end life on Earth.

In London, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson ratcheted up the rhetoric against Russia, accusing it of glorying in the attack on Skripal, which he described as a way of scaring anyone who stood up to President Vladimir Putin.

Later, Mr. Trump and the first lady will host Varadkar for a formal reception and presentation of the Shamrock Bowl.

The world leaders said: "We call on Russia to address all questions related to the attack".

"This is our moment to retain our competitive advantage".

"They are not going to take this lying down and we should expect that".
