Facebook data scandal: UK government asks Mark Zuckerberg to explain 'catastrophic failure'

UK regulators are seeking a warrant to search the offices of a political consultancy firm accused of harvesting the private information of 50 million Facebook users in a data breach.

On its activity during Trump's rise to power, it claims: "Cambridge Analytica's work informed the campaign strategy and meant key voters, who might otherwise have stayed home, were reached in their own backyards". The Commons select committee inquiry into fake news will recall Nix, questioning whether he "deliberately misled" them in recent testimony on the use of the Facebook data, and seek fresh evidence from Facebook. In addition, these reports outline serious allegations that foreign actors engaged with a U.S. campaign to create and implement a widespread influence operation that targeted American voters based on the personal information harvested from these accounts.

Cambridge Analytica, which was thrust into the headlines by staffer-turned-whistleblower Christopher Wylie, 28, was hit with fresh accusations on Monday following an undercover Channel 4 exposé into its executives.

And of course in the social media space there is the well-advanced project from Steem where you get paid for posting, sharing, upvoting and all the rest and is one of the busiest blockchains in existence and the blockchain project from Canadian-owned social messaging platform Kik and its KIN token. And remember, this is to say nothing about similar commercial practices on Facebook.

Kogan declined to provide The Times with details of what had happened, citing nondisclosure agreements with Facebook and Cambridge Analytica. After recommending FB stock for some time, I'd already become increasingly cautious toward the stock. The news feed changes announced earlier this year will - at least in the short term - depress time spent on the site. For its part, Cambridge Analytica told Reuters that it didn't use the data in the Trump campaign. Facebook has said it's not inclined to increase ad load (how many ads a viewer sees). It could also impact how you access apps if you chose to sign in with your Facebook credentials. The social platform policy allowed Global Science Research (GSR), in collaboration with Cambridge Analytica, to collect friend's data by not identifying the test takes. And BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones wonders what questions have been raised about how our data is handled.

Facebook claims that "people knowingly provided their information" to Kogan's app. No systems were infiltrated, and no passwords or sensitive pieces of information were stolen or hacked.

Cambridge Analytica insists it followed the correct procedures in obtaining and using data, but it was suspended from Facebook last week.

In 2005, the Grade 11 student was on the executive of City of Victoria Youth Council, distributing a survey to gauge the mood of local youth. It's behind only Apple (APPL), Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT) and about even with Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA).

The watchdog is also investigating whether Facebook responded strongly enough to the allegations.

Apart from Malaysia, the data company has offices in New York, Washington, London and Sao Paulo. He has the fine, firm hands of an equestrian, wrote Sydney Morning Herald's senior writer Stephanie Wood who did an interview with him in April last year (2017). It says that was exactly what Kogan did, in providing the information to a political consulting firm.

"This is based on an idea called 'informational dominance, ' which is the idea that if you can capture every channel of information around a person and then inject content around them, you can change their perception of what's actually happening", Wylie said on NBC's Today.
