Trump says memo `totally vindicates' him

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes R-Calif. speaking on Capitol Hill in Washington Oct. 24 2017

The Nunes Memo - alleging abuse of power by the FBI over the investigation into collusion between the Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign and Russia - was released on Friday (2 February).

The Republican-led House Intelligence Committee released the memo, which said the FBI and Justice Department sought a warrant for monitoring the communications of Page based on unverified information from a dossier partly paid for by Democrats.

Then, after spending three pages twisting himself into a logical pretzel to portray the dossier as the root of a corrupt investigation, Nunes ends The Memo by accidentally (?) confirming what law enforcement has been saying all along: that the investigation was not triggered by the Steele dossier, and that it began before the allegedly groundless FISA request ever happened. And the FBI, which under its Trump-appointed director says it has "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy", can't defend itself because, well, the information is classified.

"I would argue it's also somewhat unprecedented to rely on political opposition research to instruct and inform an application, and it's really bad precedent and unprecedented to not tell a court that a source has this level of bias", said U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-South Carolina). The memo also showed that the FBI and DOJ concealed from the court the political origins of the dossier and that Christopher Steele, the dossier's author, wanted to stop Trump from being elected president.

The four-page memo, with a cover letter from the White House counsel, claims that the FBI omitted information in its application for a wiretap on Trump advisor Carter Page.

The FBI signers of the FISA applications/renewals were James Comey and Andy McCabe. This is only about impugning the integrity of Robert Mueller's investigation.

Later, two White House officials said Trump was not considering parting ways with Rosenstein, at least for the moment.

They want you to believe that rogue Justice Department officials can get the kind of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant they got on Page as easily as you can have things overnighted to you by Amazon. Trump aides insist the president has no relationship with Page and did not have dealings with him during the campaign. He pleaded guilty last year to lying to the FBI. The dossier has nothing to do with an email sent by Cambridge Analytica. "What's going on in this country, I think it's a disgrace". Add Russia Investigation as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Russia Investigation news, video, and analysis from ABC News. After Trump became the party's nominee, Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee hired the Perkins Coie law firm, which in turn retained the opposition-research firm Fusion GPS to fund the dossier's production.

Other leading figures, including Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain, an Arizona Republican, are issuing dire warnings of the potential damage that undermining US institutions could cause.

Republicans, like Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., took a more nuanced approaching, acknowledging the concerns raised by the memo but also urging caution.

Colonel W. Patrick Lang is a retired senior officer of U.S. Military Intelligence and U.S. Army Special Forces (The Green Berets).

Democrats and the FBI have called the memo inaccurate and incomplete.

Democrats fear Trump will use the memo as a pretext to fire Rosenstein over his approval of an extended surveillance warrant for Page.

Republicans promised Americans that their much-hyped memo would suggest that the entire FBI investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 election is politically motivated.

The memo was commissioned by the Republican chairman of the House intelligence panel, Devin Nunes. Jones, according to the committee review of classified information, has not "begun to fight", even though ordered to do so.

Other Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee echoed Gowdy in Sunday show appearances.
