Government shutdown the result of a 'confused, chaotic White House — Scarborough

Rand Paul Dems spiked his immigration compromise to end shutdown

Trump accused the Democrats of putting US troops and border security at risk to score political points.

Since the federal government shut down, the White House has attempted to place the blame squarely on Democrats. A fifth Republican, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, voted "no" too, but only as part of a parliamentary manoeuvre to make it easier to bring another bill to the floor.

"It's next to impossible".

On Saturday, the president was left alternately defiant and angry, self-pitying and frustrated.

Trump, who spoke by phone to Republican lawmakers and agency heads on Sunday, cancelled a weekend trip to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that included a major fundraiser on the anniversary of his first year as president. He did tweet, making light of the timing by saying Democrats "wanted to give me a nice present" to mark the start of his second year in office.

Meanwhile the White House, on its public telephone and general email, has put an auto-responder which alleges that the Democrats have put the government to hostage.

But private glimmers of a breakthrough were evident by late Saturday, as moderate Democrats and Republicans began to rally behind a new short-term funding proposal to reopen the government through early February. Collins led a similar bipartisan group in working to resolve the last shutdown in 2013. Build the wall. Deport criminals. "So the conclusion there is, 'the president has a 40 per cent approval rating there 60 per cent of the country is going to be with us.' Well, not when it comes to choosing people who are not Americans over American soldiers".

The Senate is heading toward a showdown vote on Friday on legislation to keep the government open past midnight, and Democrats appear ready to block it, gambling that a weakened President Trump will have to offer concessions in the face of a looming government crisis. Instead, senators would need a simple majority - in this case 51 votes - to pass legislation.

The final vote tally in the Senate early Saturday morning was 50-49, with the majority of Democrats and a handful of Republicans voting against advancing the short-term spending bill.

What were they fighting about?

"The federal government is needlessly shut down because of Senate Democrats".

The House on Thursday passed the four-week bill, which also extends funding for a children's health insurance program. That's why this compromise will be called a Trump Shutdown. "The president needs to pull up a chair and end this shutdown". I don't have all the answers. How could you take funding for the military when we're at war and screw it up? "This is the Trump shutdown".

He ended the Obama-era dreamer protections in September, tossing it to Congress to fix. Active duty military will be unaffected, along with postal services.

"It's almost as if you were rooting for a shutdown", Schumer said, referring to Trump. But he was forced to stay in Washington. No deal has been reached. "The political system has ground to halt and it's a very unedifying spectacle indeed".

Democrats are laying fault on Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress and the White House and have struggled with building internal consensus.

Democrats, at various times, have believed that Trump would support a deal to protect the Dreamers, in exchange for certain border security measures.

A man reads the shutdown alert at the Liberty State ferry terminal in Battery Park on Sunday in New York City.

Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney listens to a question during a press briefing at the White House, Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, in Washington. His inner circle of friends is smaller, most recently with the banishment of former chief strategist Steve Bannon. "The time for empty talk is over". Reporter: With a shutdown in sight, frustration is growing.

The White House doesn't necessarily view the confusion as a problem. His disparaging remarks about African and Haitian immigrants last week helped derail further negotiations.

"But most Americans won't see a difference", Mulvaney said on "Fox News Sunday".

"Republicans control the House, they control the Senate and they control the presidency", said Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont.

For decades now, starting with President Ronald Reagan, we've had politicians from both parties make promises about cutting the federal government and its associated bureaucracy.

Senators came up with a bipartisan deal they thought he could support.

White House officials said Trump is looking forward to spending much of the year promoting his achievements on judicial nominations, deregulation and passage of the tax overhaul. At the time, Trump told Fox & Friends that the ultimate blame for a shutdown lies at the top. "I really think the pressure is on the president", he said.
