Chris Froome heads for fourth Tour de France win

Winless so far this season the maillot jaune will surely want to stamp his authority on the race today

With Sunday's stage into Paris traditionally a procession, Froome will be able to celebrate on the roads into the capital as he lead grew to 54 seconds over former team-mate Rigoberto Uran.

The stage was won by Maciej Bodnar (Bora-Hansgrohe), with Team Sky's Michal Kwiatkowski just one second behind him, in second place.

Frenchman Romain Bardet, who started the day in second place overall, suffered badly and only just managed to hold on to third by a single second ahead of Mikel Landa.

The sprinters' teams would make sure only a handful of riders got clear early on, so that they would be easier to bring back in the second-half of the stage, and then they would set up their fast men for the sprint finish.

But you don't get there without committing some practice to it. At this year's Tour, de Gendt has gone in a break on 11 of the 21 stages, including Stages 14-19, meaning he was in the break for almost the entire third week of the Tour.

Chris Froome retains to lead the yellow jersey after his Sky team finished safely in the peloton.

French rider Warren Barguil triumphed on the Izoard's barren slopes, winning his second stage of the tour after he attacked with six kilometres (four miles) left to climb to the top.

The Polish rider achieved a time of 28min 16sec, with Froome gaining insight from the team car before beginning his effort at a later time.

Such a close race has called for an entirely different approach from Froome.

Arndt pushed hard and then moved over to let Boasson Hagen take the lead, but the Norwegian simply rode the German off his wheel and powered on to the finish to win by five seconds, with Keukeleire leading home the other seven 17 seconds back.

Prior to Saturday's time trial, Froome had never trailed in the general classification by more than 12 seconds, but never led by more than 27 either.

He added he felt his immune system starting to react after the last stage in the high Alps and "I didn't feel well this morning".

Will Froome hang onto it?

"It's just an amazing feeling", Froome said. "We plan for every meter of the end of these stages and we knew he had to go around the roundabout to the right".

Ireland's Dan Martin and Nicolas Roche both finished safely in the peloton, with Martin sixth in the overall standings. As everyone knows I have my own unique style on the bike.

While Froome is now champion-elect, there will still be a fight on for the other podium spots on Sunday.

It was a different time, a different situation, a different course, but it's happened before and that has given the locals reason to believe.
